Chegara, meaning border in Central Asia’s Turkic languages, is the name of the second episode of ORTA that delves into the region’s borderlands. Starting with Uyghur music from Kazakhstan and East Turkestan, the show also features popular music from Karakalpakstan, an autonomous republic situated within Uzbekistan. Soviet-era hits share the stage with contemporary wedding hall jams––and a few 80s gems from farther afield.
