In order to overcome the German public’s initial lack of interest in this new musical genre from the States, record companies in the mid-1960s had American soul legends re-record some of their hits in German. Alongside these records – which are often rare today – German pop singers also released a number of cover versions. And some composers were so inspired that they tried their hand at this new genre with their own creations. The second instalment of ‘Das ist Soul’ takes you even deeper into the world of ‘Soul in Germany’ and presents further highlights from these exceptionally expressive recordings, which are now rarely heard.
