lange nicht gehört #49: zorn.

John Zorn.

The radical, almost violent (in a musical sense) young Zorn was my approach to jazz. His screeching saxophone on Naked City or Pain Killer were so much closer to the punk I was familiar with than the jazz of my father’s “old” classics. Of course, they are just as close to me today and there will be little to hear of the young, loud John Zorn in this episode. He also became quieter and broader in terms of his artistic work. The output that Zorn displays today, especially in the form of compositions, is almost impossible for one person to grasp. Who knows whether it would be worth it.
This short episode includes a personal sample of his work from my collection, from a little wild stuff from the early days, to his love of Morricone‘s soundtracks, to what I consider to be his best work today, Masada.
(I’d like to mention Masada‘s drummer Joey Baron in particular, I think he’s great. Other musicians who can be heard in this episode include: Fred Frith, Bill Lasswell, Bill Frisell, Mike Patton(!), and many others. Mention should also be made of his label Tzadik and trademark(?) camouflage pants, which always look so out of place in large concert halls <3 )
