Old Dirty Laundry #48

“Old Dirty Laundry” is kind of a laundromat for dirty ears. The finest beats and Hip Hop records are routinely used in a spin cycle and the familiar crackling of the record leaves a comfortably warm feeling, like a fresh pair of socks.

Old dirty laundry#48: FLAX

The DJ, musician and culture manager FLAX, who lives in Weimar, has been involved in various music scenes and subcultures since her youth, which have shaped her musically to this day. From an early age she also felt a great enthusiasm for Blues, Jazz, Funk and Soul and so she started to play the saxophone. She also discovered the world of Hip Hop for herself and from then on you could regularly meet her at rap concerts and Hip Hop parties on the weekends. By founding the FLINTA* network meta.ware in 2019 she also found her way as a DJ. When djing, FLAX prefers to let genre boundaries disappear and describes her style as “genre-fluid trips”, which can lead to UK Bass and Breaks, technoid energetic rhythms to Electro or Bass Music enriched with Hip Hop samples. For the selection of her Old Dirty Laundry Mix, the 26-year-old went through her Hip Hop and R’n’B collection and presents highlights from her last decade.

“Winter is hard and January feels endless, it was very good to hear old tracks again, to remember how friends used to show me mixtapes — DJ Jazzy Jeff & MICK’s Summertime Mix, never forget — or the sound I used to listen to on my bike. In addition to a touch of nostalgia, I also chose music from strong female voices: I can get enthusiastic about a lot of things, but these perspectives have always appealed to me a bit more. My vibe is currently very mellow and slowed down, I prefer just to listen and the mix is a homage to the good old hand-picked tapes, mixed calmly – the music in the center of attention.

By the way, on the last track you can hear how much I’m already looking forward to the warmer days, with a song by three female rapper friends @latifa.iguma @kandy_bellevie & @pink_viagra.” In addition to djing, FLAX regularly organises DJ workshops, especially for FLINTA*  and she is very involved with empowering and encouraging young people to DJ.
