Kafichanta

Kafichanta, an adaptation of the French term café chantant, refers to venues dedicated to music and dance that began to spread in North Africa in the first half of the 20th century, representing a space of emancipation, freedom, and intellectual revolution. Kafichanta is not only nostalgia for the past; it is also discovery and deeper exploration—a bridge across the Mediterranean, between old and new, between the Maghreb and the West: an interweaving of deep and reciprocal sonic influences that have shaped an era that has never truly ended, from chaoui to raï, from mezwed to gasba, from Arab new beat to oriental dub, all the way to contemporary experimental music.
