After the Taliban took over in the 90s, music education vanished in Afghanistan. All of the instruments, with the exception of a frame drum, the duff, were prohibited. Between 1996 and 2001 the museum in Kabul was looted, archives were destroyed. This is not to say that all national art is worthy of protection. Nationalist tendencies were also among the culture in the last twenty years. Still, the preservation of cultural goods is at stake right now, especially due to the lack of digital possibilities of saving and storing them. The repetition of oppression will have consequences on how you perceive this land and its people. And what we, the Afghan diaspora, will find when looking for traces of Afghan culture.
This is a Dari love letter to artistic freedom.
