Welcome to the second episode of Dope Gal Africa. In this episode,I start off my mix with a rather melancholic but equally beautiful song by the late legend Geoffrey Oryema whose music I was lucky enough to rediscover as I dug through my dad’s excellent collection of our Acholi tribal music_ a collection filled with pure Acholi gold from Nanga to hard hitting larakaraka dance music _ What resonated with me in Oryema’s poetic market day apart from the general brilliance of the track was his lyrics which sets down some of his views of life especially in his metaphoric comparison of life to an onion which when you peel, makes you cry!
I enjoyed creating a melodic journey through life’s digressive emotional landscape _spanning genres like ethno- trance, afro tech, amapiano, afro and experimental house_that evoke various feels like melancholy, love, power, female pride, joy and resilience. And I end my mix with a personal (soon to be released) Club version of one of my all time favourite visionary artists‘ speech the mighty Nina Simone.
This episode’s guest mix is served by the brilliant and multitalented Kenyan artist MAKOSSIRI. Makossiri is a Producer and Dj who makes club music that defies genre limitations. Rich in narration and soaked in a cinematic atmosphere, her music a blend of hardcore techno, psy-trance, industrial noise, and african rhythms often mixed in with her own live vocals, outerwordly sounds and elements of Afro futurism. Makossiri is currently based in Kampala and an active member of the extended Nyege Nyege Family.
