lange nicht gehört #42: VGM: fantasy.

In August ’24, ‘lange nicht gehört.’ is focusing on music from digital games. Videogame music, or VGM for short. Whether synthetic sounds from early arcade machines, orchestral titles or the ambient soundscapes from a distant world. The sub-theme is as diverse as music itself. Each of the weekly episodes will take a different approach to music in games. 🕹️🎶

The brief nature of the episode already shows that we are entering the niche of the niche: classical, orchestral music rarely touches me even in movies. But even here there are title melodies or composers that make me stop. Be it the score for Journey, with which Austin Wintory won the first (and so far only) Grammy for a game. Or his soundtrack to The Banner Saga trilogy, which just about dissolves as the game world is destroyed. The games in this episode are often set in medieval fantasy; perhaps this makes the often far too pathetic music work better for me.
