Soundgalerie #6 – Musical «Crate Digging» across Africa

Almost 40 years after the invention of Afrobeat and the label “world music”, a steadily growing community has emerged in Europe and North America, looking for the sounds from the Global South. It consists of crate diggers, DJs, collectors but meanwhile also of a broad public dancing in the clubs to Steve Monite’s Only You Babe.

Western music labels in particular are at the center of this exchange. They discover, collect and mediate the music of mostly long forgotten African artists. But how exactly do they get access to the music objects? What are their intentions and how are they acting in the context of a restitution debate about African objects?

Let’s find out together in this new episode of Soundgalerie. Together we look at the intentions and collecting practices of the two music labels Sahel Sounds & Ostinato Records. Looking forward to it!
