This episode of Island Time takes us for a short trip away from the tropical belt up into the UK to explore the genre of Bhangra, a folk-fusion music originating with the Punjabi diaspora. Specifically looking at a period in the late 80s/early-mid 90s when Punjabi musicians were planting a unique foundation within the underground club culture in the UK, which at the time was already a melting pot of culture. Taking strands from hip-hop, the Caribbean sounds of Reggae/Dancehall, Jungle, Acid, House and anything else that swirled up in the UK underground at the time, Bhangra became cemented as a sound that drew so much yet gave respect to the tradition of its musicians. This mix aims to put together songs that span some of these genres and are some of my favorites of this era. I made it in my motel while on my beach vacation so I hope the sunny environment of its creation comes through!
