This episode of Island Time takes us for a short trip away from the tropical zone up into the UK to explore the genre of Bhangra, a folk-fusion music originating within the Punjabi diaspora. Specifically looking at a period in the late 80s/early-mid 90s when Punjabi musicians were planting a unique foundation within the underground club culture in the UK, which was already a melting pot of various immigrant and urban movements. Taking strands from hip-hop, the Caribbean sounds of Reggae/Dancehall, Jungle, Acid, House and anything else that swirled in the underground at the time, Bhangra became cemented as a sound that drew from so much yet gave respect to the tradition of its musicians. This mix aims to put together songs that span some of these genres and are some of my favorites of this era. I put this one together in my motel while on a beach vacation, so I hope the sunny environment of its creation comes through!
